Another reason to love Takoma Park: TROHV

I am having an awesome weekend, hopefully you are too!

I must have said it a lot on this blog and I will say it again, I love Takoma Park!  I love the neighborhood, I love my neighbors who bbq with me, I love that I have a Farmers' Market half a block away from me YEAR ROUND and that there's a hardware store just around the corner...now there's one more thing to love about Takoma Park.  TROHV!  As a crazy fan who reads Apartment Therapy, Etsy, a bunch of home decor blogs daily or maybe twice-daily, I was so excited when I found out that a vintagey modern home good store was taking over the empty ugly lot across from CVS.  Also, you have no idea how thrilled I was when the ugly exterior of the building was finally painted a beautiful tint of slightly greyish blue when TROHV arrived!!!

I've visited the store now a handful of times since it opened and every time I go in there, I am in awe of what the owners have done to the place.  How is it that a hugeeee lot, filled with tons of different things:  cards, vintage bottles, furniture, kitchen items, cook books, quilts, baby clothes, bowling pins (!), etc etc (the list seems endless), be organized in such a way that makes sense and above all, beautiful, comfortable, artistic, and inspiring.

Yesterday, to celebrate their grand opening, TROHV had a party!  It was great to see tons of people from the community enjoying good food and good music for the occasion.  Here are some photos!

The dessert table was amazing.

And ladies and gentlemen, I became a believer of cake pops last night.  I thought they were a phony fad, but nope, after having one it all made sense - it's the perfect and un-messy way to have a little bit of cake and frosting!!!  They are delicious, why didn't someone think of that sooner?  And you know, photographing cake pops were tough, I can't seem to get the focus quite right...but here are my attempts anyways!

The band was awesome!
Here's one of the band's many little cute fans that day.

And what's a party without icy beers in buckets!! :)

If you haven't been to TROHV and are a fan of vintagey and modern things, go check it out.  This is not a paid advertisement so you can trust me :)

And lastly, here's to TROHV, congratulations and I hope you guys will stay around for a longggg longgg time.

Rain Rain Go Away

The rain ruined my plans to get myself out around town..which was quite disappointing.  BUT a book arrived :)  YAY for that.  And oh look, the sun came back out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I should have gone out since I was soaked anyways.....oh well...

Happy Weekend!  This weekend will be a lot of photographing with my dslr + my film camera, doing my homework, having a frou frou latte for both ICM and I, hopefully catching up with some friends, and going to the Farmers' Market!!!  Heirloom tomatoes, I absolutely cannot wait.

flan...butterflies....just can't think of a title.

Sorry for being MIA!  I've been busy preparing myself for ICM's departure for his 5 week trip.  HA! And perhaps much to his dismay, this means me becoming 'slightly' more needy than I usually am but I try to offset that by cooking a ton and fattening him up via prime rib, cookies, Daphne's most amazing & simple corn dish AND her flan (below...yeah, the window edge is dirty, err)!!! Hope that works!

With all this extra time I have on my hands now, this means you might be seeing more blog posts than you ever wanted to!!!  Of course, this entirely depends on school and homework.  Speaking of which, our assignment for composition this week is to shoot 15 macro shots.  I bought close-up filters since I didn't have a macro lens but I don't like it  because it makes the pictures all soft (no detail etc).  Lucky for me, Peter has a macro lens and with that came a fun plan to go to Brookside garden and the Butterfly exhibit to do some macro shots!!!  It was a lot of fun walking around with Peter and his wife, Sharon.  Of course, one of the best parts was going to eat at the Korean food court at H mart after perspiring a ton inside the butterfly exhibit.  If you haven't been, go, it's great!

Here are some shots from today.  The great part about assignments from school nowadays is that they ask you not to post process, so it's made me think a lot more about really getting it right when I take the photo.  At least I try to.  All the photos you see here are straight from the camera, no post-processing; with the exception of increasing the brightness a tad in the photos of the purple flowers.  Saves so much time, haha.

Peter, thanks for letting me use the lens!!

HAVE A GOOD FOURTH OF JULY, EVERYBODY!!!

Lovely simple days

I don't know when it was that I started appreciating the simple and peaceful days more and more.  Those awesomely good days don't have to take place anywhere crazy, glamorous, or even beautiful.  Fulfilling good days could be extremely simple - sitting on the couch for a cup of home made coffee, it could be eating  blueberry muffins together fresh out of the oven, it could be going grocery shopping.  Those beautiful moments can happen anytime and anywhere when you appreciate what you have and know how lucky you are to have it.  Loss is indeed possible.  So if you do love something or someone, always feel lucky to have it/them (even on bad days, especially on bad days) and don't forget to show it.  You just never know.

And yes, ICM and I went blueberry picking this weekend :)

I love love love my lovely simple days.

I Love Boston

ICM and I had a wonderful time two weekends ago in Boston staying at Neil and Daphne's BBBBB "BBQ, Booze, Badminton, Bread, and Breakfast."  Daphne+Neil, thank you so much for such a wonderful time!!!  Can't wait to see you guys and the cats again soon!

As I had written before, a visit to Daphne and Neil always mean awesome rib-eye hamburgers, great cocktails, croissants from my most beloved Iggy's, and most awesome of all, a lot of laughs with Daphne and Neil and great company from the cats Brownie and Bootie!  This time smoked ribs and my favorite dishes from Shanghai Gate were also squeezed into the weekend.  I am not joking when I say that I gained more than 5 pounds from 2 days of non-stop eating.  This trip was also ICM's first time in Boston, so even though we didn't do a whole lot of touristy stuff, it was really nice walking through the city, wandering around, and admiring the charm that is the City of Boston.  Love love love love love!

Did I mention the super gorgeous weather????

I love Iggy's!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

They really make the best croissants - Flaky on the outside, fluffy and buttery on the inside, yummmmmmm

Onto another amazing food item of the weekend - rib eye hamburgers.  They are DELICIOUS, flavorful and juicy!  With brioche buns from Iggy's, Daphne's awesome caramelized onions, they really beat any restaurant made hamburgers!  Here's a photo of these 1/2 pounds plump patties...unfortunately I botched the photo of the assembled product, major FAIL.  That's what I get for taking a photo too quickly and decided not to re-take even though I knew the lighting wasn't so great because I wanted to start eating.  BLAH, time and time again, the fatty in me beats the photographer in me. I am going to try to fix it somehow, so stay tuned...

Ending the post with two of my favorite cats, Brownie & Bootie, they are the cutest!

Good night!

Gochisousamadeshita - Ren's Ramen in Wheaton, MD

Sapporo Tonshio Ramen with extra toppings:  egg and stewed fatty pork (i.e. pork belly)

Ren's Ramen
11403 Amherst Ave
Wheaton, MD 20902
(301) 693-0806
M-Sat 11:30-3; 5-10pm
Sun 11:30-5-9:30pm
Closed every second and third Tuesday of the month
[Note:  The ramen I am talking about is not packaged ramen, not 10 for $1 Top Ramen...I'm talking about authentic Japanese ramen with broth that takes days to make and hand made noodles!]

When I moved to DC 4+ years ago from LA, I knew that I needed a couple of things in order to live happily here:  Sushi, Korean food (soon dubu chigae!), Pho/Vietnamnese food, Taiwanese food (yay for A&J and Bob's), authentic Mexican-style tacos, and Japanese ramen.  Within my first or so year here, I found everything except tacos and ramen.  Lucky for me, since then, I've discovered good enough tacos and now that Ren's Ramen has reopened, my list of required foods is complete!!

I found Ren's Ramen through my obsessive search on google for "ramen in dc" every month or so.  I would say that up until Ren's opened in Bethesda, there were no authentic ramen restaurant in the dc/md/va area.  And no, Temari in Rockville does not count.  So you wouldn't believe how happy I was when I found them.  When they announced that they were closing in September 2010, my heart broke a little and I've been waiting for their reopening ever since.

Ren's Ramen reopened yesterday on June 1.  I didn't make the reopening and threw a fit like a little bratty cry baby but I am so glad I made it today!! Ren's is just 2-3 blocks from the Wheaton Metro Station on the red line; very convenient.  ICM and I arrived at 5:00pm just when they opened and got our food pretty quickly.  My bowl of tonshio ramen with egg and stewed pork belly was delicious!  The tonkatsu (pork based) broth was flavorful and perfect, not too salty!  Noodles were cooked well, not soggy, just right.  The egg is...hmmm...I can't describe it except that it tasted like heaven.  The pork belly has a hint of soy sauce flavor and melts in your mouth, ahhh; definitely get it if you like pork belly!  ICM's miso ramen was also good though I will aways lean towards the tonshio :).  While the gyoza doesn't light up fireworks for me the way the ramen does, I still like it a lot - very standard.  5 stars for sure!

Just go! You won't regret having awesome food and supporting a cozy small business!
